Jennersdorf has begun construction of a multi-purpose sports hall expected to cost about 11 million euros, ORF reported Wednesday. More than 100 people attended the project presentation and groundbreaking ceremony, held opposite the town’s outdoor swimming pool.

The municipality had considered building the hall for almost eight years, and the project appeared stalled for a long time. Mayor Reinhard Deutsch of the JES citizens’ list said it would bring both economic and social benefits to the community.

The state will provide most of the funding, Governor Hans Peter Doskozil of the Social Democratic Party said. The municipality will operate the hall, which is intended to strengthen regional facilities for sports and social events.

The hall is planned to have more than 500 seats and 300 standing places. It will host school-leavers’ balls, and Jennersdorf’s judo and volleyball clubs will use it as their home venue. Completion is scheduled for early 2028.
