German driver dies in Fernpass road crash, wife seriously hurt

A 77-year-old German man died and his 76-year-old wife was seriously injured in a head-on collision with a lorry on the B179 Fernpass road in Breitenwang on Tuesday, ORF reported.
The crash happened near the Planseewerk South exit. Police said the couple was travelling north when their car went straight through a right-hand bend for an unknown reason and struck an oncoming lorry. The car was thrown over an embankment and came to rest in a roadside ditch.
Rescue crews from the Reutte and Breitenwang fire brigades, the Red Cross, Reutte mountain rescue and police attended, along with an emergency helicopter. The operation lasted several hours.
The man later died from his injuries, police said. His wife was flown with serious injuries to a clinic in Murnau. The lorry driver was treated at the scene. The Fernpass road was closed for hours, causing significant traffic disruption.
