Wrong-way driver gets four-month suspended sentence after crash

A 42-year-old Bosnian man has received a four-month suspended prison sentence and a €960 fine after causing a serious crash while driving the wrong way on the A2 motorway on Christmas Eve 2025, ORF reported. The ruling by Klagenfurt Regional Court is not final.

The man was found guilty of grievously negligent bodily injury. He told the court, through an interpreter, that he had driven onto the A2 in the wrong direction near the Villach interchange and turned around because his navigation system had instructed him to do so.

The resulting collision with a car left a married couple with serious injuries. The man, his wife and their two children were also injured.

After the verdict, the man said he could not afford the fine or the €1,000 in partial compensation for pain and suffering sought by each of the car’s two occupants. The prosecution made no statement on the ruling.
