Furttal launches Switzerland’s first robotaxi service

Passengers can now book rides in self-driving cars in the Furttal region of Zurich canton, SRF reports. Three electric cars serve nearly 100 predefined stops in Boppelsen, Dänikon, Hüttikon and Otelfingen.

Passengers book through the Iamo app, short for “intelligent automated mobility.” After registering, up to three people can be picked up at each stop. The cars operate daily from 1pm to 5pm.

Fares start at 4.70 Swiss francs, plus 0.38 francs per kilometre. The pilot is not part of the public transport fare system, so GA and Half Fare travelcards are not valid.

A safety operator sits in the driver’s seat during trips, while the front passenger seat remains empty. The project builds on tests that began in summer 2025 to create a detailed map of the trial region. Switzerland’s Federal Roads Office approved automated driving in November 2025.

A recent collision caused damage when a car travelling at 20 km/h failed to detect a base plate for a 30 km/h speed-limit sign. The car’s tyres were damaged. The Federal Roads Office confirmed that the other cars could continue operating safely.

The Iamo project began in late 2024 and is planned to run for up to five years. Automated minibuses may be added, operating without an onboard safety operator and monitored remotely by trained staff, subject to approval from the Federal Roads Office. The cars will continue to carry a safety operator.
