Marie and Jakob top Styria’s baby-name rankings

Marie and Jakob were the most popular baby names in Styria in 2025, while the number of births continued to fall, ORF reports. The State Statistics Office recorded 9,680 newborns, 258 fewer than in 2024, a decline of 2.6 percent.
Highest birth deficit since 1945
For the second consecutive year, fewer than 10,000 children were born in Styria. The average number of children per woman fell from 1.28 in 2024 to 1.26 in 2025.
The gap between deaths and births also widened. There were 3,824 more deaths than births in 2025, the highest deficit recorded since 1945.
Jakob was the most popular name for boys for the fifth time, with 96 boys given the name. Noah ranked second with 92, followed by Maximilian with 88.
Marie moved up from second place in 2024 to become the most popular name for girls. It was given to 81 girls, followed by Emilia with 80 and Valentina with 72.
Emil made the biggest advance among boys, rising from 32nd to 16th place. Among girls, Ella climbed 13 places to rank tenth.
Life expectancy falls for women
The number of deaths rose by 1.9 percent to 13,504, an increase of 253. Life expectancy for women fell from 84.8 to 84.5 years, while the figure for men remained unchanged at 80 years.
A total of 85,282 people in Styria were aged over 80, more than the entire population of the Südoststeiermark district.
Marriage numbers decline
There were 6,275 marriages in Styria in 2025, 325 fewer than the previous year and a decline of nearly five percent. Same-sex couples accounted for 101 marriages, including 54 male couples and 47 female couples.
Grooms were aged 36.8 on average and brides 34.4. The youngest bride was 16 and the oldest was 91. Four grooms were 18, while the oldest groom was 98. For three men and four women, it was their fifth marriage.
Marriage ended after 63 years
There were 2,072 divorces in 2025, nearly 11 percent more than in the previous year. A five-year analysis found the highest numbers in the Leibnitz and Graz-Umgebung districts and the lowest in Murau and Südoststeiermark.
The longest marriage to end in divorce in 2025 had lasted 63 years. The shortest ended after just under six months. The oldest divorced woman was 74, while the oldest divorced man was 81.
