Search teams find missing man safe near Salzach

A large search operation involving about 110 emergency workers ended after a missing man was found safe near the Salzach river in Oberndorf, Salzburg state, ORF reported.

Police alerted emergency services at about 8 a.m. on Tuesday after passers-by found clothing on the riverbank. Authorities feared that someone could be in the river and began a large-scale search for a man described as being middle-aged.

Numerous emergency organisations from Austria and Germany took part. They included the Oberndorf volunteer fire brigade, units from St. Georgen in Upper Austria, the professional fire service and emergency teams from Laufen in Bavaria.

Divers from the Salzburg professional fire service, the water rescue service, the Red Cross, search dogs, a fire service drone team from the Flachgau district, police and additional German water rescue teams were also involved.

Two police helicopters and one Austrian and one German rescue helicopter searched from the air. Boats and water rescuers were deployed as well.

Search teams narrowed the area using the time of the last sighting and the Salzach’s flow speed. The missing man was eventually found safe in Maria Bühel, within the municipality of Oberndorf.
