Vienna district considers pigeon loft for Julius-Tandler-Platz

Vienna’s Alsergrund district is examining whether a city-run pigeon loft can be installed at Julius-Tandler-Platz, the square outside Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, ORF reported. The move aims to prevent the pigeons from breeding uncontrollably as problems at the square worsen.

The city department MA 48 has increased cleaning intervals to limit the contamination, district head Saya Ahmad told ORF. The district has also requested more frequent checks by the Waste Watchers and put up signs asking people not to feed the pigeons.

Ahmad said the district had asked the responsible Vienna city authority to assess the construction of a pigeon loft and was now waiting for the review. Vienna currently has four city-run pigeon lofts, where pigeon eggs are replaced with plastic eggs.

Tierschutz Austria, which confirmed its offer of support to ORF, said it would help ensure that people no longer feed the pigeons privately around the loft if the project goes ahead.
