Linz opens information park for planned regional railway

Linz has opened an information park at the future Donaubahnhof station for the planned Regional-Stadtbahn Linz, ORF reported. The opening marks a step in the development of the regional railway project, which is intended to improve mobility across the region.

The RSB Infopark uses five information panels to explain the railway and the future Donaubahnhof. Visitors can learn about the planned station and the benefits for public transport.

The park also offers opportunities to speak directly with those responsible for the project and provides information about urban development around the planned transport hub. A project exhibition gave visitors an initial look at the plans in November 2025.

“The Regional-Stadtbahn Linz is an investment in mobility, quality of life, competitiveness and, ultimately, a better future for our state,” said Günther Steinkellner, Upper Austria’s councillor for mobility and infrastructure. “With the RSB Infopark, we are creating a place where the project is already visible and tangible today.”

The Donaubahnhof is planned as a central transport hub linking rail, trolleybuses and bus lines. It is expected to serve about 20,000 passengers a day. Its location on the banks of the Danube, near the New Railway Bridge, is intended to provide short connections and modern infrastructure to make switching to public transport more attractive.

“Large infrastructure projects depend on transparent information, communication and intensive dialogue with neighbouring groups and stakeholders,” said Sonja Wiesholzer, managing director of Schiene OÖ. “The RSB Infopark offers an opportunity to get to know the Regional-Stadtbahn Linz from a new perspective and learn about the project in a public space.”

Planning for the railway is currently in the submission phase and is due to be completed by 2027. Initial construction preparations are scheduled to begin in 2028, with official construction planned for 2029.

The section between Linz Central Station and Mühlkreisbahnhof is scheduled to open in 2032. The route will initially be single-track to allow it to be integrated into the urban environment.

New construction projects are also planned at the Wildbergareal, linking the railway project with urban development. The plans are intended to create a lively district and long-term conditions for housing, work and mobility.
