Vienna city buses expand routes beyond the city centre

Vienna’s city buses are marking their 50th anniversary with new routes that improve connections in the central district and beyond, ORF reports. The 2A and 3A routes have been revised, with 17 stops newly built or adapted and modern hydrogen-electric buses introduced.

The 3A was extended this week to better serve the area around Seilerstätte. It continues via Schwarzenbergplatz to a new terminus near the opera, giving residents, workers and visitors more direct public transport connections.

The 2A now runs directly from Stephansplatz via Schwedenplatz and Karmelitermarkt to Augarten. The journey takes about nine minutes. Leopoldstadt district head Alexander Nikolai said the route brought Stephansplatz, Karmelitermarkt and Augarten closer together.

The sixth district will also be involved in the adapted city-bus network. In 2027, route 57A is due to be extended to the opera, improving connections to other public transport services including the U1, U2 and U4 underground lines.

The city buses’ 50th anniversary was celebrated at Stephansplatz on Saturday. Visitors received information about the new routes and could take free special trips on a historic city bus from 1987.
