Court clears Weinviertel West transport overhaul for 2027

The Lower Austria Administrative Court has cleared the way for a restructuring of public transport in western Weinviertel, ORF reported. From summer 2027, call taxis will supplement conventional bus services across the region.

Existing railway lines and regional buses operated by the Lower Austrian Transport Organisation Company, known as NÖVOG, will form the main public transport connections in Weinviertel West.

Most of the region will also be served by demand-responsive public transport through Leopoldi call taxis. The taxis can operate at times and on routes where large buses are not used. Passengers will be able to book them by telephone or through an app.

“With Weinviertel West, we are taking public transport to a new level. We want to implement the best service and the highest quality for our passengers,” Lower Austria’s transport councillor and deputy governor, Udo Landbauer of the FPÖ, said.

The new service was originally scheduled to begin this year. Its launch was delayed by a review application from an unsuccessful bidder. The Lower Austria Administrative Court rejected the application and confirmed NÖVOG’s procedure in full.

Until operations begin in 2027, the current route services will continue unchanged under the existing transport operator.
