REX trains to return to Fritzens-Wattens station in July 2027

Regionalexpress trains will stop at Fritzens-Wattens station again from July 2027, ORF reported on Thursday. One REX 2 train will stop there every hour under timetable changes scheduled to take effect on July 10, 2027.

The changes will slightly adjust departure and arrival times, meaning the REX service will no longer stop at every station at exactly 30-minute intervals. The deviations will be included permanently in the new timetable.

Every second REX 2 will provide an hourly connection from Fritzens-Wattens to Innsbruck and a direct service towards Kufstein between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. The station currently has 76 daily connections on the S4 suburban railway line. The REX stops will add 35 more.

The journey from Fritzens-Wattens to Innsbruck will take 13 minutes by REX, while the trip to Kufstein will take 45 minutes.

Until the new service begins, construction-related effects from the corridor closure between Salzburg and Rosenheim on the German side will continue to affect the timetable.

REX trains have not stopped at Fritzens-Wattens since the timetable change in December 2023. The heavily allocated tracks in the Lower Inn Valley made it impossible to add a stop to the REX services, which now run every 30 minutes.

Werner Dilitz, regional manager at Austrian Federal Railways, said fitting an additional stop into the dense mix of local and long-distance services between Innsbruck and Kufstein had been an operational challenge. The timetable changes have created enough flexibility to restore the REX stops at the new Fritzens-Wattens station from mid-2027, he said.
