Carinthia records 1.5% rise in jobseekers

The number of jobseekers in Carinthia rose by 1.5% in August 2026 when people taking part in training programmes are included, ORF reported. The number of unemployed people alone increased by 2.3% compared with August 2025, while participation in training programmes fell by 2.8% over the summer.

Melanie Jann, deputy managing director of the Carinthia office of the Public Employment Service, said the number of employees remained stable at 228,000. The number of vacancies rose by 18.8% compared with August 2025, particularly in auxiliary jobs, construction and metal and electrical work.

Unemployment increased by 3.9% among people over 50 and by 5.8% among the long-term unemployed. Jann said Carinthia remained below the Austrian average in both groups.

Women aged between 20 and 24 were particularly affected. Unemployment in this group rose by 62 people, or 10.1%.

Apprenticeship vacancies decline

Among people over 25 seeking work, the number rose by 5.1%. The number of people seeking apprenticeships increased by 10.2%, while immediately available apprenticeship positions fell by 3.1%.

By district, the largest increases in the number of jobseekers were recorded in Wolfsberg, at 7%, and Feldkirchen, at 6.2%. The largest declines were in Hermagor, at 9.2%, and St. Veit an der Glan, at 5.5%.
