Vienna begins work on climate focused municipal housing project

Construction has begun on more than 80 municipal apartments in Vienna’s Favoriten district, ORF reported. The project in Kurbadstraße is part of the “Climate Friendly Living by the U1” development and will include open spaces, community facilities and a focus on climate resilience.

Planning prioritised resource conservation and climate resilience. The buildings will be integrated into the existing terrain to minimise intervention in the soil and preserve valuable trees. Green spaces, private outdoor areas, rooftop gardens and other planted areas are intended to improve the quality of the surroundings and create a pleasant microclimate.

Compact buildings, efficient floor plans and innovative construction methods are expected to reduce both construction and operating costs.

The project is located directly next to Kurpark Oberlaa, a park, and is designed for 200 people. Its central feature will be a community room with a kitchen on the first floor, connected directly to a shared terrace. The development will also include a laundry room with a rooftop terrace, urban gardening areas and numerous shared spaces. A woodland playground will be built among the existing trees.

The project is the 29th new municipal housing development in Vienna to start construction. Twenty have already been completed and provide homes for around 4,800 people. More than 1,000 new municipal apartments are currently being built across the city, while further housing developments are in the planning phase.
