Attackers target Bundeswehr career centre with paint and foul liquid

Unknown attackers targeted a Bundeswehr career centre in Munich with paint and a foul-smelling liquid, BR reported on Monday. They also smashed a window, and police suspect the perpetrators came from the left-wing extremist scene. The state security division is investigating.

Several people allegedly smeared the building with paint overnight from Sunday to Monday and broke a window at the rear entrance. According to initial findings, the attackers threw a plastic bottle containing a pungent-smelling liquid through the broken window. The odour spread through the ground floor.

A local resident heard the window shatter and alerted police. Looking out of the window, the resident reportedly saw seven people moving away towards the Olympiapark. Unit 43 of Munich Criminal Investigation Department, which handles politically motivated offences linked to the left-wing scene, has taken over the investigation.

Police estimate the damage at several thousand euros and are asking the public for information.

The Bundeswehr career centre in Munich provides information for people interested in military or civilian careers with the German armed forces. The centres also offer training advice, conduct recruitment tests and support reservists. The Bundeswehr operates more than a dozen career centres across Germany.

Bavarian authorities warn of left-wing extremism

At the beginning of August, Bavaria’s domestic intelligence service warned of increasing radicalisation among extremists. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann also warned of growing willingness to use violence, saying that the former consensus in much of the scene against using violence against people was “effectively no longer in existence”.

According to the minister, violence and threats were directed not only at political opponents such as the AfD, but increasingly also at representatives of the state.
