The worst of the heat has passed for now, but its effects on the body can last longer, ORF reported. The Upper Austrian Medical Chamber advises people to watch for warning signs, particularly among older adults, who often recover more slowly from fluid and mineral losses.
Dizziness, unusual tiredness, concentration problems and muscle cramps may indicate that the body is still dealing with the effects of the heat.
Older people should be especially alert. The sense of thirst declines with age, while the body becomes less able to cope with high temperatures. Certain medications can also affect the body’s fluid balance.
Heavy sweating during hot weather can cause the body to lose minerals, and it may take time to restore them. The medical chamber therefore recommends continuing to drink regularly after periods of extreme heat, with 1.5 to two litres a day advised, and maintaining a balanced diet.
Persistent symptoms should be assessed by a doctor.
