Munich, police operation, Schwabing

Police in Munich’s Schwabing district shot and seriously injured a man who was reportedly handling a pistol-like object in the street, BR reported. The approximately 20-year-old man was taken to hospital, police said.

Police received an emergency call at about 5.15 p.m. Officers approached the man, and at least one shot was fired from a police weapon. Police said no criminal act had occurred beforehand, adding that officers respond with substantial forces when someone is reported to be carrying a weapon.

Criminal investigators, forensic officers and staff from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office arrived at the scene. The state criminal police office investigates whenever a police officer uses a firearm.

The area around the junction of Clemensstraße and Belgradstraße has been widely cordoned off. Trams are unable to operate there, and police reported significant traffic disruption. However, there was no danger to the public, police said.

Witnesses were questioned at the scene, where a witness collection centre was also established.
