A photo gallery published by SRF traces the history of the school satchel as the new school year begins on Monday in the canton of Zurich, most of central Switzerland and several other cantons.

Photographs from Switzerland in 1930 show the satchel as a longstanding companion for children on their way to school. By 1999, the cowhide satchel remained the leading model in classrooms. Made from sturdy cow leather, it accompanied generations of schoolchildren in their daily routines.

Its durability has kept it in use for decades, and isolated examples can still be seen on schoolchildren’s backs today. From around 2005, colourful satchels made from newer, lighter materials began replacing the traditional fur-look model, although that appearance continued on some modern designs.

By 2007, the range of designs included spaceships, comic characters and butterflies. Children who preferred less conspicuous styles could choose plain models or satchels with subtle floral patterns, such as those made by the Swiss brand Funki.

Modern satchels have also become less angular, with ergonomic designs intended to make them more comfortable to carry. According to manufacturers, current models offer more comfort, safety and features than ever. That has come at a cost: Galaxus said prices had risen by about 40 percent over the previous six years as of 2024.

Despite the changes, the satchel’s purpose remains the same: carrying books, exercise books and a snack box safely through a child’s school years.
