Former celebrity chef Alfons Schuhbeck will not return to prison for now after a medical assessment found he remains unfit to serve his sentence, BR reported. The suspension of his prison term has been extended until at least May 2027.

A medical expert commissioned by Munich prosecutors concluded that Schuhbeck was “still not fit for prison at this time,” the prosecution office said. His condition will be reviewed again in May.

The 77-year-old has cancer and is receiving treatment outside prison. Under German law, a sentence can be suspended if a person’s illness cannot be adequately diagnosed or treated in prison, or if their life is at risk.

Schuhbeck was sentenced in July 2025 to four years and three months in prison for offences including tax evasion, delaying insolvency proceedings, subsidy fraud, failure to keep proper accounts and intentional bankruptcy. His businesses, which included restaurants, a spice shop and a catering service, accumulated substantial debts. Creditors claimed 27 million euros in insolvency proceedings.
