Fire in Graz apartment building injures resident

A woman was injured and nine people were evacuated after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Graz’s Straßgang district on Thursday, ORF reported.

The 41-year-old resident noticed unusual behaviour from her dog on a surveillance camera at about 9.30am while she was at work. She returned home and, on opening her apartment door, saw smoke and the dog coming towards her. A fire had broken out in one of the rooms, and she called emergency services.

A police patrol was first to arrive. Officers found the woman and her dog in the stairwell and gave her first aid until paramedics arrived. She was taken to Graz University Hospital.

The Graz professional fire brigade extinguished the fire and cleared smoke from the building. Investigators are still determining the cause and the extent of the damage.
