Seibersdorf Laboratories has opened a new laboratory and production building for radiopharmaceuticals in Seibersdorf, in the district of Baden, after investing 17 million euros, ORF reported. Production at the larger facility is scheduled to begin in 2028.
Radiopharmaceuticals are medicines containing radioactive components. They can be used in imaging to show processes such as metabolism, and some are designed to bind to tumour tissue for cancer treatment. Kerstin Rumpelmayr of Seibersdorf Laboratories said they can help doctors diagnose conditions including Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. In cancer treatment, she said, they can target affected areas more precisely than conventional radiotherapy.
The building at the Tech Campus Seibersdorf was constructed over the past two years. The company plans to move its current production there in stages. Seibersdorf Laboratories develops manufacturing processes and analytical methods for radiopharmaceutical ingredients, and provides development and production services to clinics and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
The company currently produces radiopharmaceuticals for clinical studies, among other purposes. Wider production of therapeutic medicines requires approval from the relevant health authorities. One potential application is prostate cancer. The new facility is designed to expand production for international markets.
