Salzburg’s city government has unanimously agreed to assess three possible locations for a new Austria Salzburg stadium, ORF reports. The club’s current ground is considered too small and is expected to stop meeting second-division requirements by the end of the 2030-31 season.

The locations to be examined are an ASFINAG property, the exhibition grounds and Sportzentrum Nord, a sports centre in the Liefering district. Mayor Bernhard Auinger said last week that a 5,000-seat stadium at Sportzentrum Nord, near the Westautobahn, was an option.

The existing ground in the Maxglan district officially has 1,566 places. All of Austria Salzburg’s home matches have sold out since the club returned to the second division last year. A large residential development is due to be built next to the stadium in the coming years.

The city senate’s decision calls for checks on zoning conditions, lighting and noise at the three locations. The city will also continue talks with the club, begin initial discussions with the state of Salzburg and prepare an initial cost estimate.

The NEOS party, which is not represented on the city senate, criticised the decision for not examining whether Austria Salzburg could also use the Red Bull Stadium in Wals-Siezenheim.
