A walk-in soil exhibit outside the Landhaus in Eisenstadt is offering a look at the layers beneath the ground until November 15, ORF reported. The display includes an oversized earthworm and enlarged models of other soil-dwelling creatures.
Visitors can see woodlice, pseudoscorpions, soil centipedes and springtails, as well as profiles showing how soil layers are arranged.
Markus Puschenreiter, Burgenland’s soil-protection coordinator, said the exhibit explains how soil organisms contribute to nutrient cycles and aerate the ground.
Deputy Governor Anja Haider-Wallner said soil is the basis for life and that the organisms living in it help crops grow.
The soil cube was developed in Upper Austria and is touring the country. After its stop in Eisenstadt, it will return to Linz, where it will remain permanently accessible to visitors.
