Seven businesses in Lower Austria’s nightlife sector have opened this year, offering early signs of stabilisation despite continued closures, ORF’s Lower Austria news service reports.

Going to the same disco every Friday or Saturday is no longer a given. Many people now choose specific events instead, making it harder for club operators to fill their venues. Some are responding with new concepts to draw more people onto the dance floor.

The Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce says the traditional disco as a regular weekly meeting place is losing importance. “That time when people simply met at a venue on Friday or Saturday is certainly over,” said Dietmar Schöner, head of its gastronomy division. Theme nights and appearances by specialist DJs are becoming more important, he said.

Eventstage, a club in Krems, is among the venues trying a different approach. Its Oldies Night features hits from past decades and aims to attract people who have not been out dancing for some time. Visitor Janos Baumgartner, from Tulln, said he and his group had not been there for 15 years. Petra Piller, from Krems, said she was pleased to be able to dance with her children.

Club operator Lukas Aigner said the traditional club as a weekly meeting place had become outdated, so Eventstage now offers different themes and events. He also pointed to social media as one reason for changing habits: people who once went to discos to meet others can now do so on digital platforms.

The Chamber of Commerce said seven businesses in the nightlife sector had opened in Lower Austria so far this year. It said this was not yet a turnaround, but could indicate that the situation was stabilising. One example is Club Allegro in Ravelsbach, in the district of Hollabrunn, which is reopening. The chamber said some businesses and regions were still struggling to survive, but expressed cautious optimism that closures may have reached their lowest point.

Whether nightlife will recover in the long term remains unclear. The new openings and event formats show that operators are continuing to look for ways to attract visitors.
