A 32-year-old man has received a suspended 10-month prison sentence for his role in a failed attempt to produce crystal meth at a parish house in the Waldviertel region. The verdict at Krems Regional Court is final, ORF reported.
The man was accused of planning the production in July 2024 with a priest, who has since left the clergy, and two other men. He was also accused of storing drug precursor substances at his home. A separate case involving the illegal handling of drugs in Vienna was heard at the same trial.
The defendant and the prosecution both waived their right to appeal, a court spokesperson told ORF. The trial had been postponed three times after the man failed to appear. Police brought him to court on Friday.
The former priest and the two other defendants were sentenced in October 2025 to suspended or partly suspended prison terms. Those verdicts are also final, and the defendants admitted the charges.
The case came to light after a search of the parish house in July 2024. An expert report found that attempts to make crystal meth had failed because of the substances used and faulty instructions.
