A 39-year-old man died after driving the wrong way and colliding head-on with an oncoming car in Wels, ORF reported. Two other people were injured, one seriously.

The crash happened at about 2 a.m. on Linzer Straße. The driver, from the Grieskirchen district, turned the wrong way and drove against traffic on the carriageway heading out of the city. After a few hundred metres, he collided with a car driven by a 22-year-old Bosnian citizen from the Linz-Land district.

A 44-year-old driver from the Wels-Land district, travelling behind, could not brake in time and crashed into the two vehicles. The 39-year-old died at the scene. The 22-year-old was seriously injured and taken to Klinikum Wels; the 44-year-old sustained minor injuries.

Investigators are still trying to establish how the 39-year-old entered the wrong carriageway. The 22-year-old has not yet been questioned. An autopsy has been ordered to determine whether alcohol or drugs may have played a role.
