A 28-year-old hiker from Vienna spent the night at a mountain refuge after becoming too exhausted to continue towards the Hochschwab summit on Saturday, ORF reports. He was uninjured and descended into the valley with mountain rescuers on Sunday.

The man was hiking near the G’hackten section shortly before 2 p.m. when he called for help. Members of the Thörl mountain rescue team climbed up to him and provided assistance. Strong winds prevented a helicopter rescue, so he continued to the refuge accompanied by rescuers.

Following the incident, alpine police urged hikers to plan trips carefully and assess their fitness, route difficulty and current weather conditions. They said shorter autumn days and increasingly challenging high-mountain conditions make it especially important to allow enough time, carry suitable equipment, warm clothing and a headlamp, and turn back if energy runs low or the weather changes.

Several rescue operations have taken place on the Hochschwab in recent weeks, including fatal alpine accidents.
