Bavaria, cattle, Grainau

A cow with horns seriously injured a 76-year-old woman in Grainau on Saturday afternoon, BR reported. She was taken by rescue helicopter to the accident clinic in Murnau.

The woman was walking with her husband on a farm track in Tegernau, near Grainau, that runs through a cattle pasture when the cow suddenly attacked her and knocked her to the ground, police said.

The German Alpine Club advises walkers to stay on paths through pastures and keep at least 20 to 50 metres from cattle, with an even greater distance from leashed dogs. It also recommends avoiding shouting, sudden movements, attempts to approach the animals and direct eye contact, and taking particular care around herds with young animals. Cattle can weigh several hundred kilograms and may run faster than expected.

Cow attacks have caused serious injuries and deaths. In July, a cow rammed and threw a hiker near Königssee. In Austria in mid-May, a cow attacked a couple, fatally injuring the woman.
