Vienna’s Ottakring Clinic has opened a temporary trauma unit in a timber modular building, ORF reported. The new facility will serve until the hospital’s central building is completed.

The unit includes trauma surgery and an intensive care ward. The building and its medical equipment cost 56 million euros, and construction took about a year and a half while the clinic remained open.

The clinic’s accident department treats more than 53,000 outpatients each year and is one of the busiest in Vienna, according to the Vienna Healthcare Group. The new unit has 68 rooms and 3,130 square metres of usable space across three floors. It offers more room for emergency care, shorter routes and air conditioning in patient rooms.

The intensive care ward’s layout has also been reorganised. The department head said equipment for regularly checking the blood oxygen levels of patients on ventilators is now close to each patient room.

The plastic surgery department is expected to move into the pavilion in the coming months. The trauma surgery and plastic surgery departments, along with intensive care, are due to move into the new central building in 2033.
