A 25-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a car in St. Stefan ob Stainz on Saturday evening, ORF reported. He was wearing dark clothing and crossing an unlit stretch of road.

The collision happened at about 7.30pm. Police said the 21-year-old driver, from Deutschlandsberg district, may have seen the man too late. The impact threw him into a roadside ditch.

The driver called emergency services after realising she had hit someone. The pedestrian suffered serious head injuries, was treated by an emergency doctor and taken to hospital by rescue helicopter.

A separate crash in Thannhausen, in Weiz district, left two drivers injured on Saturday. A 64-year-old man from Lower Austria was turning towards Anger at an intersection when his car collided with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, driven by a 26-year-old woman from Deutschlandsberg. Both were taken to hospital with injuries of undetermined severity.
