Austria, road safety, Salzburg

Two teenagers were killed and an 18-year-old was injured when a car carrying five young people crashed in Nußdorf late Saturday, ORF reported.

The BMW left the road on an old federal highway in the Pabing commercial area and overturned several times before hitting a stone block, police said. The 17-year-old driver was at the wheel.

Three teenagers in the back seat were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the car. A 16-year-old and an 18-year-old died at the scene. The injured 18-year-old was taken to Salzburg Accident Hospital.

The driver and his 17-year-old passenger said they were uninjured, but were taken to hospital for examination. Red Cross crisis intervention teams attended the scene alongside firefighters and emergency services. The public prosecutor’s office ordered autopsies.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The prosecutor’s office commissioned vehicle engineering expert Gerhard Kronreif to examine the circumstances, including the BMW’s speed. He said the extensive crash scene and damage to the car would allow the speed to be calculated fairly precisely.
