A helicopter crew rescued a 31-year-old South Korean tourist from the Dachstein plateau on Friday after ankle pain left him unable to return safely, ORF reported.
The man had set out to visit the Hallstätter Glacier. He took a cable car to Krippenstein and hiked along the Trägerweg towards Eissee. Northwest of Taubenkogel, he called for help, but initially could not clearly explain his problem. After several phone calls, police established that he had ankle pain and would not make it back before dark.
Police said he had no alpine equipment and was wearing only light trainers. To avoid a search in the mountains after nightfall, the flight police were called. Rescuers picked him up and flew him down to the valley on a short line.
