A groundbreaking ceremony for Austria’s first temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was held in Vienna’s Döbling district on Saturday, ORF reported. The ceremony marks the start of demolition work on the existing community centre on Silbergasse.

About 4,700 members of the church live in Austria. The religious community, which is based in the United States, has been officially recognised in the country for more than 70 years. Until now, members have had to travel to Frankfurt to visit a temple for ceremonies such as religious weddings.

Plans call for a multi-storey building of nearly 1,400 square metres, made of white natural stone and featuring tall windows and a stepped flat roof with decorative trim.

The project was announced in 2021. The temple is expected to be completed in three years.
