Up to 500 households in Tyrol can receive free insulation kits for heating and hot-water pipes under a campaign to reduce energy loss, ORF reported. The Mission Keller-Check campaign is run by Energieagentur Tirol with support from the state of Tyrol, the city of Innsbruck and insulation manufacturer Steinbacher.

Uninsulated pipes, particularly those running through unheated cellars, release heat into their surroundings. This means heating systems must use more energy to keep homes at the desired temperature. A warm cellar can be a sign of such heat loss.

The campaign runs until June 30, 2027, while supplies last. Energieagentur Tirol estimates that insulating pipes can save about 40 kilowatt-hours of energy per metre each year. For a typical detached house, it says the reduction in heating costs could reach 100 euros annually. Actual savings depend on factors including pipe length, the heating system and its flow temperature.

Participants must photograph their uninsulated pipes and measure their lengths and the dimensions of any bends. A suitable kit is then prepared and sent to them free of charge. After installing the insulation, they must upload a photo of the completed work to the campaign website.

Installer Selina Greml said homeowners should insulate all accessible hot heating and hot-water pipes in the cellar where possible. Bends and valves can also contribute to heat loss. With careful preparation, the work can often be completed in a few hours.
