The Medical University of Graz has launched a university course on diagnosing and treating post-viral syndromes, ORF reported. It is intended to help doctors and other health professionals recognise the conditions and provide individual care.
Some people do not recover after an infection, a problem that became more visible during the Covid pandemic but had been seen before, including after the Spanish flu, the university said. Although knowledge of post-viral illnesses has grown, many patients still face a long wait for a diagnosis and appropriate care.
Long Covid has brought post-viral syndromes into greater public and scientific focus, while highlighting how varied symptoms and illness courses can be. The university said clinicians should look out for post-exertional malaise, in which symptoms worsen significantly after physical or other exertion.
Because symptoms can affect different parts of the body, supporting patients may require several health professions to work together. Course director Thomas Weber said many patients first have to explain that their illness is real before they receive help. Careful assessment and attention to each person’s limits are particularly important for those with severe exertion intolerance.
The course brings together health professionals who work with people experiencing post-viral illness. It covers diagnosis, treatment options, current research and the management of Post-Acute Infection Syndromes. It is designed to fit around work, and participants can also take individual modules.
Weber said the health system also needs trained points of contact, clear routes to assessment and better cooperation across professional boundaries. He said research should continue and stressed the importance of listening to patients.
