Burgenland has reappointed Mathias Burger as government commissioner at the nonprofit housing company Neue Eisenstädter for another year, ORF reported Wednesday.

The state appointed Burger a year ago after a special audit to oversee the company’s business operations. Neue Eisenstädter and an audit association challenged the appointment at the state administrative court, which has yet to rule.

Burgenland said a state parliamentary inquiry committee had found that the supervisory authority had no less intrusive measure available to ensure compliance with the Housing Non-Profit Act. The commissioner’s work over the past year had also confirmed that his role remained necessary, the state said, citing financial procedures that needed adjustment and structural shortcomings.

The state said the company’s internal controls were still insufficient to ensure reliable compliance with legal requirements. Further audits by the commissioner are under way, and the state government said reappointing him was necessary because of the continuing risk of non-compliance.
