Vienna’s Ottakring district will get a new waste recycling centre beside the existing facility in Kendlerstraße, ORF reports. Construction is due to start in mid-2027, with the project expected to cost about 22 million euros.
The new centre will be built on a former Wiener Netze property, just metres from the current facility at Kendlerstraße 38, which is too small and cramped. Plans include covered, sunken containers, more than twice as many waste collection areas, free compost and a 48er-Tandler box for items that are old but still in good condition.
The project will also include a full winter-service depot with a silo system. The building is planned to have a green roof and green facades, as well as a photovoltaic system.
The existing centre will remain open until the new one is completed, currently expected in September 2028. The city says the new facility is needed to improve the circular economy. Climate City Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky said unavoidable waste would be collected separately, processed to a high standard and turned into sought-after secondary raw materials.
