Work to replace Austria’s longest motorway bridge is on schedule, the Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG told ORF. The Lueg Bridge, on the A13 Brenner motorway in the Wipptal valley, has been a major construction site since March 2025.
Construction is currently focused on the valley-side bridge, with 14 cranes in use. All supports for structures 1 to 4 on the northern section have been built, and more than 40 supports have been poured in total. Some stand up to 60 metres high. The roadway deck is complete on two structures, project manager Andreas Färber said.
Traffic continues to use the existing bridge. Weight limits and mostly single-lane traffic are helping reduce the strain on the bridge, which has been heavily affected by wear. Färber said the traffic arrangements were working for both road users and construction crews.
The existing bridge is being closely monitored. Because the new bridge is being built alongside it, crews must take care with the deep excavations to avoid damaging the current structure or disrupting traffic. The first new structure is due to be completed by the end of 2027. The approaching cold season is the project’s next challenge, Färber said.
The 14 cranes, whose cabins at around 100 metres can only be reached on foot, are being used to build the valley-side bridge. They will also be needed for the mountain-side bridge, which will carry traffic towards the Brenner. ASFINAG is investing 380 million euros in the replacement.
