ASFINAG has stepped up security at the S 10 Mühlviertel Expressway construction site in Rainbach im Mühlkreis after people repeatedly entered the restricted area, ORF reports. Cyclists, joggers and even horse riders have bypassed barriers and used completed sections of the road.

The company said people had moved construction fences to reach the new route. Hazards may not be immediately visible, including trenches and shafts with drops several metres deep. Construction traffic also changes constantly, and taut horizontal wires used for concrete and asphalt work pose a particular danger.

A teenager died at the construction site in June 2026 after going under a reversing construction lorry.

Security staff now patrol the site regularly, and cameras monitor the construction area. Police are also carrying out more frequent checks. ASFINAG said the existing barriers were generally sufficient and urged the public to stay out of the site.

The Rainbach bypass is due to open to traffic in autumn 2027.
