Austrian cabaret performer Lukas Resetarits is retiring from the stage immediately and permanently after 49 years, ORF reported Wednesday, citing a statement from his management.

After 30 solo cabaret programmes, performances had become increasingly demanding physically and stressful, his management said. Resetarits, 79, had therefore decided to step away from the stage, it said.

Resetarits also helped shape Austrian television and film. He gained cult status as Major Adolf Kottan in the television series “Kottan ermittelt” and appeared in the ORF series “Tohuwabohu”, the television cabaret programme “D.O.R.F.” and Ernst Hinterberger’s “Kaisermühlenblues”.

His management said the farewell was difficult for Resetarits and asked the public to respect his decision.

Earlier this month, Resetarits and his brother Peter received Vienna’s Golden Decoration of Merit. At the ceremony, Mayor Michael Ludwig praised Resetarits for reaching generations with “sharpness, wit and linguistic precision”, and said his work reflected critical engagement with the times and a deep connection to Vienna.
