Salzburg municipalities will pay half the cost of building and maintaining footpaths and cycle paths along state roads within built-up areas, under an amendment to the state roads law reported by ORF. Their share was previously at least 30 percent.

The change follows years of disagreement over the costs. The City of Salzburg had argued that it should pay only a third, and several projects stalled, including a cycle path along Innsbrucker Bundesstraße.

State Governor Karoline Edtstadler said setting the share in law would make the rules clear and avoid separate agreements. Salzburg Deputy Mayor Kay-Michael Dankl welcomed the clarity and said projects, including those at Eder junction and Münchner Bundesstraße, could now move forward.

The existing arrangement remains in place for cycle paths outside built-up areas, where the state covers all costs.
