Monday 5th October 2026 on 20:45 in Bavaria

Munich, public transport, rail closures

Construction will disrupt S-Bahn and U-Bahn services across the Munich region this autumn, with closures on the trunk route and lines to Erding, Gauting and the airport, BR reports. Four U-Bahn stations are also undergoing repairs.

The S-Bahn trunk route will close from the night of Friday, October 16, until the morning of Monday, October 19. Between Pasing and Munich Central Station, only the S6 and replacement buses will run. Between Central Station and the airport, only the S1 will operate; it will run directly to Moosach without stopping. The S8 will bypass the trunk route, with no stops between Ostbahnhof and Pasing. Passengers travelling from Ostbahnhof into the city are advised to use the U-Bahn or tram. Another trunk-route closure is planned for the first weekend in November.

From the morning of October 12 until the morning of October 16, all tracks to Munich Airport station will close for cable installation for a new electronic signalling system. S1 passengers will transfer to replacement buses at Neufahrn, while S8 passengers will change at Ismaning. Regional express trains between Freising and the airport will also be replaced by buses.

Erding will be without S-Bahn service for seven weeks from October 9. The S2 will terminate at Markt Schwaben, with replacement buses covering the remaining 12 kilometres. The slow section is due to be repaired by November 30, allowing trains to resume normal speeds.

Buses will replace trains between Grafing and Ebersberg on October 17 and 18 while a slow section is repaired. The S6 will be suspended between Pasing and Gauting from October 23 to November 23, with replacement buses running instead. The Werdenfelsbahn between Starnberg and Munich Central Station will also be replaced by buses from October 23 to November 9.

Repairs at four U-Bahn stations

Work resumes on October 5 at Poccistraße and Goetheplatz stations on the U3 and U6 lines. Until the end of November, a shuttle train will run between Implerstraße and Goetheplatz, with replacement buses also available. The broader renovations at both stations are due to finish by August 2027.

At Max-Weber-Platz, two escalators are being replaced. The U4 will be interrupted from October 5 until November 27. During the same period, U5 trains from Neuperlach will not stop at Max-Weber-Platz, although U5 trains from the city centre will. Passengers are advised to change to a tram at Ostbahnhof when travelling towards the city.

Renovation at Neuperlach Süd station is expected to continue until November 8. The U5 will terminate at Neuperlach Zentrum, with replacement buses running from there.

A railway spokesperson in Munich said it had not been possible to avoid several S-Bahn closures coinciding this autumn, given the high volume of necessary work.
