The municipal council in Stans, near Schwaz, unanimously elected incumbent deputy mayor Gerhard Meixner as the municipality’s new mayor on Monday evening, ORF reported.

All 13 council members voted for Meixner, although his Stanser Bürgerliste holds six of the council’s 13 seats. Four lists are represented on the council. Meixner told ORF the unanimous result was far from a given.

After the election, Meixner said he would initially focus on affordable and assisted housing. He had stood as the lead candidate for the Stanser Bürgerliste in the most recent municipal election but did not run for mayor because of his work with construction company Lang Bau. He said he had now reached an agreement with his employer, clearing the way for him to take up the role.

Meixner succeeds Michael Huber, who stepped down at the end of September after nearly 23 years in local politics, including 16 as mayor. Huber cited the redesign of the village centre, the children’s centre, the associations and municipal centre, and infrastructure and supply improvements as highlights of his time in office.

Daniel Ludwig, previously a member of the municipal executive, was unanimously elected as the new deputy mayor.
