Lower Austria, motorcycle crashes, road safety

Two motorcyclists died in separate crashes in Lower Austria on Sunday, ORF reported. The victims were a 68-year-old man in Schwarzau im Gebirge, in the district of Neunkirchen, and a 19-year-old in Pöggstall, in the district of Melk.

The 19-year-old local man crashed shortly before 4.30pm in Würnsdorf, a locality in Pöggstall, after overtaking several vehicles and hitting a traffic sign. He died at the scene.

The crash in Schwarzau im Gebirge happened shortly after 2pm. A riding error is suspected. The 68-year-old’s motorcycle went onto the roadside verge, and its front wheel struck a storm drain cover. The rider was thrown about 10 metres through the air.

Passing motorists gave first aid and called emergency services. A doctor at the scene could only confirm the man’s death.
