A driver was seriously injured when his car left the B100 and hit a noise barrier in Vassach, a district of Villach, early Sunday. ORF reported that the vehicle was thrown about 170 metres along the road.
Emergency services were alerted at about 3.20am. The car struck the barrier almost head-on. Although an initial report said someone was trapped, the driver got out of the wreckage by himself and was found injured on the road.
A fire service emergency doctor and a Red Cross ambulance crew treated him before he was taken to Klagenfurt Hospital. The impact scattered vehicle parts over nearly 200 metres and tore out the electric car’s high-voltage battery.
Firefighters illuminated the scene and contained leaking fluids. A private towing company removed the car, and firefighters and road workers cleared the road, which was closed during the response and cleanup.
Villach’s main fire station and the Vassach volunteer fire brigade responded with seven vehicles and about 30 personnel. Police patrols and the Red Cross were also at the scene.
