Nearly 6,000 dogs are taking part in the International Dog Show in Tulln this weekend, where judges will select the best dog in each breed, ORF reports.

Before entering the ring, the dogs have their coats brushed, hair trimmed and nails clipped. Ten-year-old Johnny, owned by Katrin Eisen of Ginzersdorf in the Mistelbach district, is an experienced competitor. “He knows it, he loves it,” Eisen said. “He walks into the show ring and says: Here I am. Look at me.”

The Austrian Kennel Club is organising the Bundessieger Tulln show, which runs from Friday to Sunday at Messe Tulln, an exhibition venue. The event has been held for decades and draws breeders and dog enthusiasts. Its programme also includes demonstrations, activities for visitors and talks.

More than 250 breeds are represented, from Chihuahuas to greyhounds. Judges assess each dog’s gait, build and appearance against its breed standard. Eisen, who breeds English Cocker Spaniels, said correct build and movement help dogs stay healthy as they age. Austrian Kennel Club president Philipp Ita said the event also supports healthy pedigree breeding.

The final decision on the Bundessieger title will be made on Sunday in the “honour ring”. For some owners, taking part is already a win. The show will return to Tulln in 2027, when the town will host the World Dog Show.
