Operator plans .vienna domain despite modest .wien uptake

A .vienna internet domain is expected to become available in late 2027 or early 2028, although the exact timing is not yet clear, ORF reports. Domainworx managing director Ronald Schwärzler said the company has the support letter from the City of Vienna required to offer a domain for a national capital.

Since its launch in 2014, the .wien domain has been registered around 15,500 times. Domainworx had expected more registrations, Schwärzler said, but the business remains viable. The company currently registers an average of 100 to 150 new .wien domains each month.

Domainworx is part of the Compass group, which also offers domains including .tirol and .cologne. Customers can expect to pay around 100 euros a year to use one.
