Truck overturns in Wattens roundabout, spilling fuel into sewer

A truck overturned in a Wattens roundabout on Tuesday, spilling fuel into the sewer and disrupting traffic for hours, ORF reported. Results of a drinking water test were still pending.

The crash happened at about 11:45 a.m. at the Swarovskistraße roundabout. The truck was carrying construction rubble and entered the roundabout at nearly 28 km/h before overturning for reasons that remain unclear. The driver was uninjured and got out of the vehicle without help.

Fuel that leaked from the truck flowed into the sewer. The volunteer fire brigade contained the spill, and the Wattens/Fritzens wastewater treatment plant began checking the wastewater. Results were not available by Tuesday evening.

Traffic was diverted locally because of heavy congestion. Bahnhofstraße was initially closed to heavy vehicles and later shut to all traffic while the truck was recovered. The road reopened at about 4:30 p.m., after cleanup work. The recovery took nearly five hours.

Police said they would send a report to the Innsbruck public prosecutor’s office and the Innsbruck district authority.
