Switzerland diesel price hits record high at 2.41 francs

Switzerland’s diesel price has reached a record high of 2.41 francs per litre, SRF reported, citing the Touring Club Schweiz on Friday. The price surpasses the previous record set in 2022.

Unleaded 95 petrol has also become more expensive, reaching an average of 2.10 francs per litre. That is five centimes more than a week ago. Its previous record was 2.31 francs per litre in 2022.

The Touring Club Schweiz attributed the increase to several factors, including the war in Iran and disruptions to oil shipments in the Middle East. Diesel and petrol exports from Russia have also fallen sharply, while several oil facilities and refineries there have been damaged.

Switzerland is facing supply constraints as well. The refinery in Cressier in the canton of Neuchâtel, which covers about 30 percent of the country’s demand for petroleum products, was shut down for several days.

Low water levels on the Rhine have also made shipping more difficult for months. Transport between Rotterdam and Basel now costs more than 220 francs per tonne, compared with the usual 22 to 28 francs. According to the Touring Club Schweiz, Rhine transport alone is currently adding about 15 centimes to the price of a litre of fuel.
