NGEN activates Austria’s largest grid-serving energy storage facility

NGEN, a technology company specialising in energy solutions, has brought what it says is Austria’s largest grid-serving energy storage facility into operation in Wagenham, in the municipality of Pischelsdorf am Engelbach in the Braunau district, ORF reports. The facility is designed to deliver 85 megawatts of power and has a capacity of around 170 megawatt-hours.

Connected at high-voltage level, the storage system is intended to offset fluctuations in solar and wind power and strengthen grid stability, the company said in a press release.

Andreas Ljuba, country manager of NGEN Austria, said the project showed that the energy transition was “not an abstract goal”.

NGEN Austria also operates a large-scale storage facility in Arnoldstein, Carinthia. It designed another facility in Fürstenfeld, Styria, which is operated by Fürstenfeld municipal utilities.

Construction of the Pischelsdorf am Engelbach facility took six months. The investment was in the tens of millions of euros.
