Austria’s Lukas Neumayer will face Belgium’s top-ranked player, Zizou Bergs, in the second singles match of their Davis Cup tie on Friday, ORF reported after the draw in Vienna.
The 24-year-old from Radstadt will play Bergs in Vienna’s Prater. Jurij Rodionov will open Austria’s second-round qualifying tie against Belgium from 12:45 p.m.
Neumayer said Belgium would be the paper favourite but believed Austria could win matches. It will be his first appearance for Austria in the Davis Cup.
Belgium will be without two players from the world’s top 40, improving Austria’s chances, according to captain Jürgen Melzer. He said a strong start by Rodionov could put pressure on Bergs and allow Neumayer to play more freely.
On Saturday, the newly formed Austrian doubles team of Lukas Miedler and Neil Oberleitner will face Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen. The tie will conclude with Rodionov playing Bergs and Neumayer facing Alexander Onclin.
